DEEPCOOL PM650D Power Supply Review

Recently we receive an opportunity to review Deepcool products and we asked for budget segment PSUs. So today we are reviewing a budget segment PSU from DEEPCOOL, the DeepCool PM650D Series non-modular power supply with 80 PLUS Gold certificate for efficient power delivery with great performance at a great value.

This PSU is targeted to the economical PC buyers offering 80 PLUS GOLD certification, a quiet 120 mm fan, Heavy-Duty black flat cables, and above all DEEPCOOL also offers 5 year warranty on this PSU.

Now let’s see what this DEEPCOOL PM650D PSU has for us.

Guarantees a minimum efficiency of 90% or higher under typical loads for reliable power delivery with little waste.

For solid power performance and minimal signal noise, the PM-D series PSU features a full-bridge LLC topology with DC-DC conversion and Japanese bulk capacitors that delivers terrific reliability.

Made to meet modern power supply design standards for consistent voltage stability, each PM-D power supply is also compliant with Intel PSU guidelines that support instant-on power from sleep or standby modes.

The PM-D series power supplies are compliant with the 2014 ErP regulations on energy savings and also the IEC 62368-1 for safety standards.

Safeguard your power source with well-round circuit protection including OPP/OVP/SCP/OTP/OCP/UVP.

DEEPCOOL PM650D 650W PSU comes in a securely packaged box with PSU graphics, Model name and features highlights on front and the back of the box.

The DEEPCOOL PM650D power supply offers nice PCB design from CWT as OEM. The PSU is designed with a full-bridge LLC topology and uses DC-DC conversion for 5v and 3.3v. PSU also have good Japanese bulk capacitors.

120mm 12v fan for cooling.

Nice PCB layout.

Quality soldering and SMD component on back side of the PCB.

All the required components for reduction of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and main high voltage DC rectifier and switching components are mounted on a thick heatsink.

Nippon Chemi-Con a good Japanese bulk capacitor on primary side.

Japanese capacitors for 12v filtration

DC-DC conversion module with copper shielding.

The DEEPCOOL 650W power supply handled above gaming setup very comfortably at 1080p medium setting and without any overclocking. To be frank I was pushing the limits of this PSU, as 750Watts is the minimum requirements for this type of configuration.

Custom made DC Active dummy load PSU tester.

Load Test

To test the PSU on my Active load test, I have manually increased the load in Amps on 12v first rail, 12v second rail, 5v and 3.3v rail to simulate 100%, 80% 50% and 20% load. Since this PSU is having only single 12v rail, so divided the load in half on both 12v loads on my tester.

5V stand-by and -12V supply was left at a constant 0.5amp load throughout the test run.

Maximum theoretical load handling capacity of my tester is somewhat around 1500W, but due to MOSFETs safe operating area (SOA) characteristics and thermal load handling capacity of the heatsinks, this tester can handle Max 1300W.. For safety reasons I have also installed a thermal controller which turn OFF the attached PSU if temperature exceeds SOA specifications.

During test the PSU ran smoothly close to 690W of load, when tried to pull more the PSU turned itself OFF showing the proper working of Overload protection .
